Does the Bible command child sacrifice? Exodus 22:29 says "the firstborn of your sons you shall give to me" — and Exodus 13:13 spells out what happens to a firstborn who doesn't get redeemed. So when Christian caller Cliff staked his entire moral argument on obeying God's law, Dr. Aaron Adair and I just read him the law. In this call-in clip from The Line, Cliff argues that good and evil only mean anything if they're grounded in God's commands — then spends fifteen minutes insisting that God's law never asked anyone for a child's life. It does. We read it out loud, verse by verse. We cover: • Exodus 22:29-30 — "The firstborn of your sons you shall give to me," in the same breath as the oxen and the sheep, on the same eighth day. • Exodus 13:13 — every firstborn donkey is redeemed with a sheep, and "if you do not redeem it, you must break its neck." The very next clause covers "every firstborn male among your children." • Exodus 13:14-15 — the reason the law gives for it: the Lord killed every firstborn in Egypt, "from human firstborn to the firstborn of animals." • Ezekiel 20 — God says he gave Israel "other statutes that are not good, and laws through which they could not live." By God's own account, some of God's laws are a punishment. • Dr. Aaron Adair on the ancient Near East: firstborn child sacrifice was normal, it was believed to guarantee fertility, and this law treats your firstborn son exactly the way it treats livestock. • The hypothetical that ends it — you're an Israelite, you're poor, you have a son to redeem and there is no sheep. This Jesus historicity case claims the normal rules of historical inquiry support Jesus—until those rules are actually applied. Does the Bible say women are property? Exodus 20:17 lists your neighbor's wife between his house and his donkey. This Christian caller came on to argue the Bible isn't misogynistic — then admitted on air that he hasn't read it.
