Almost 100 Couples Married Already!!
Florida Marriage Equality
At the very first of the year, Marriage Equality in Florida finally won out. On that day Judge Robert L. Finkle ordered that ALL counties in Florida must issue marriage liscenses to Homosexual Couples wanting to get married on January 5th, when Marriage Equality goes into effect for Florida. He originally had a stay on striking down the Gay Marriage Ban at the end of last year. That stay ran out on 5 Jan 2015.
On August 21, 2014, Judge Hinkle ruled that Florida’s laws barring same-sex couples from marriage violate the equal protection and due process requirements of the federal Constitution and stayed his ruling until January 5, 2015.
Issuing Liscenses Early
On January 5th, those in the Miami-Dade area were able to obtain liscenses on the 5th and get married on the 6th. The Catholic Bishops of Florida weren't very pleased with this change:
The Catholic bishops of Florida are deeply disappointed by Judge Hinkle’s ruling, as well as refusals by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States to stay the decision while appeals pend.
How society understands marriage has great public significance. Because of this, redefining civil “marriage” to include two persons of the same sex will have far-reaching consequences in society. Such a change advances the notion that marriage is only about the affective gratification of consenting adults. Such a redefinition of marriage does nothing to safeguard a child’s right to a mother and father and to be raised in a stable family where his or her development and well-being is served to the greatest extent possible.
I find this grievance really odd considering the illegal nature of the Catholic Church in general. They will spend $5B to protect their priests from the victims they create but yet they are disappointed by two loving individuals getting married.
While this is a huge win for the Equality of all people in the US, Florida still has shit to work on:
Right now in the state of Florida, if you’re lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, you can still lose your job for simply being who you are,” Tony Lima with Save Dade explained. “You can be denied services. You can be denied housing.
This is an awesome first step to equality for the LGBTQ Community.
